Head Coach's Report: Record-Breaking Wins and Strong Momentum for the Löwen
HRC Editorial • Hamburger Rugby-Club von 1950 e.V.
In his mid-season report, Head Coach Gareth Jackson delivers an encouraging review of the campaign so far across all sections of the Hamburger Rugby-Club von 1950 e.V. – from record-breaking Bundesliga performances by the Löwen to derby glory for the 2nd XV and impressive national tournament finishes by the Youth Academy and Lionesses.
💬 Head Coach’s Take
“Overall we’re in a strong place, and it’s amazing what a result can do for a group of players. We have a great run into Christmas and the entire squad is buzzing.”
— Gareth Jackson, Head Coach
🏆 1st XV: Record-Breaking Bundesliga Road Trips
After battling through the opening three rounds of the season against arguably the top three sides in the 1st Bundesliga North/East, the Löwen hit their stride in spectacular fashion:
- 15:55 Away Win vs. Berlin Grizzlies
A dominant away performance in the capital. The 55-point tally marked the highest number of points ever scored by Hamburger Rugby-Club in a first-division Bundesliga fixture. Fluid offloads, abrasive set-piece work, and clinical finishing dismantled the Berlin defence. - 3:70 Away Triumph vs. SG Odin / VfR Döhren
Just seven days later, the squad raised the bar even higher. Despite missing several key regulars due to holidays and illness, the Löwen put on an attacking clinic in Hannover, racking up 70 points in a commanding performance.
| Fixture | Opposition | Score | Key Milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Away (Berlin) | Berlin Grizzlies vs. HRC 1st XV | 15 : 55 | Club record for most points scored in 1st Bundesliga |
| Away (Hannover) | SG Odin / VfR Döhren vs. HRC 1st XV | 3 : 70 | 10+ tries scored despite squad rotation |
🔥 2nd XV & 3rd XV: Derby Dominance & Expanding Depth
The 2nd XV has grown well beyond pre-season expectations, holding the top spot in their league table:
- 39:12 Derby Victory over FC St. Pauli 2nd XV
The definitive standout moment of the autumn campaign. Fielding a squad packed with new recruits and promoted youth academy graduates, the 2nd XV comfortably outclassed the local rivals with a 39:12 victory at the Stadtpark.
Meanwhile, the 3rd XV (competing in partnership with HSV Rugby) continues to expand steadily. The team is making tremendous strides in match sharpness and is rapidly turning Sunday afternoon kick-offs into a well-supported club tradition with passionate sideline support.
🌟 Academy Bronze in Heidelberg & Lionesses in Potsdam
The club’s long-term development pathway continues to bear fruit across all age grades and formats:
- U18s Finish 3rd in Heidelberg:
Competing against heavyweight state selections and national-team talent pools from Frankfurt and Baden-Württemberg, the HRC U18 squad captured an outstanding 3rd place finish. - Lionesses Take 5th in Potsdam 7s:
Our Women’s squad took on a competitive nine-team field in Potsdam, demonstrating sharp 7s execution and defensive resilience to secure a well-earned 5th place.
📅 Final Push Before the Winter Break
The Löwen now face a decisive run of fixtures leading into Christmas:
- 2nd XV: League-decider against the Hamburg Exiles on 7 November
- 1st XV: Bundesliga home clash against RC Leipzig on 6 November, followed by tough away encounters against SC Germania List and Hannover 78 (20 November)
With team cohesion at an all-time high and squad depth expanding across every grade, Hamburger Rugby-Club is poised for an exciting future!
